Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Greetings from Santo Domingo.

The 4oth Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL) will be held  from Sunday, June 6 through 12, in the beautiful Dominican Republic.  This unique event is being organized, in the Quisqueyan land,  by a Collaborative Team integrated by different colleagues, specialists in the Domincan information field, under the special leadership of the Asociación de Bibliotecas Universitarias Dominicanas (ABUD), the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the Instituto Nacional de Formación y Capacitación del magisterio (INAFOCAM), the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña (UNPHU), the Universidad APEC, and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC).

The selected theme for this year is  Innovation and Impact in the Caribbean: Evidence-based Practice of the Information Professional. Our efforts have been directed to offer a significant learning space to propiciate the acquisition of new knowledge and skills development, in concerted efflort, as members of the Acurilean Community of Practice that we are.

The evidence-based practice, as presented in this conference, is a systematic approach geared to transform the information professional endeavor, that ACURIL places within the framework of the intelligent organization concept, to apply the best available research evidence, in the provision of information services, along with pragmatic perspectives of library work, to enhance outcomes. The process allows to improve, enrich and strengthen the quality and effectiveness of information services.  It requires a systematic implementation, knowledge management, the continuous documentation of daily work, and the sharing and exchange of best practices.  The proactive action will allow all of us to contribute and disseminate widely the experiences that we have in the information field, in different ways, to build up and bring to fruition the real spirit of the Acurilean community of practice.

At its 40th Anniversary celebration, ACURIL orients itself to bring this enriching space to its members, and other information professionals, that will gather in this event, in order to value the human capital intelligence of information professionals, within the framework of his/her daily endeavor.  It pursues to stimulate a different action to perform, in synergistic way, to set a foundation and to systematize the work to be conducted by librarians, archivists, documentalists, educators in the field, and representatives of the information industry, in an effort to strengthen the professional’s decision making based upon objective and verifiable data, guided by the scientific research process.

Our event has key conferences, seminars, hands-on workshops,  and exhibits of the information industry with particular updates, to ensure that the expected learning goal is achieved.   The Local Organizing Team has worked incessantly  to offer the most precious environment to make our stay in this Quisqueyan site a memorable one, and we appreciate it wholeheartedly.

Let us share the experiences and enjoy the significant learning environment.

It will be my pleasure to greet you personally,

Carmen Margarita Santos-Corrada, MLS
