ACURIL in Solidarity with the Libraries and Archives in Haiti Campaign

ACURIL in Solidarity with libraries and archives in HaitiWe are All ACURILEANS.  And the ACURILEAN Community is in solidarity with the Libraries and Archives in Haiti.  ACURIL launches this special campaign to support, as much as we can, the ideas and needs of libraries and archives in Haiti.

At a meeting held on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technologies of the University of Puerto Rico, President Carmen Margarita Santos-Corrada, Treasurer Ileana Rosa-Sotomayor,  Incoming Treasurer María de los Ángeles Zavala and Executive Secretary Luisa del Carmen Vigo-Cepeda, discussed how ACURIL can best lead a campaign to contribute significantly to some of the needs of the libraries and archives in Haiti, as identified by Mme. Françoise Thybulle, Director of the National Library.

After consultation with Executive Council members and some past presidents, decision was made to launch a special campaign on March 2010 to alert our colleagues and friends  regarding  our major goal and objectives, and to motivate them to join ACURIL in a collaborative effort.

This Campaign, entitled ACURIL in Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti, includes the following key Action points:

  • Book and Other Materials Donation Drive in French and Creole. This item requests Acurilean colleagues and friends, particularly those attending ACURIL XL in Dominican Republic in June 6-12, 2010, to contribute to this Donation Drive, either by presenting resources on site or giving monetary contributions, to allow purchasing the needed materials and eliminate the risk of getting duplicated resources or items that are not needed.  A Table for the ACURIL in Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti Campaign will be placed, adjacent to the ACURIL Secretariat/Treasury Table, at the Conference Exhibits area.  The book drive and other related activities will take place in this area.
  • Book Donation Drive for Haitian Babies. This Drive is geared to cater the curiosity and learning needs of babies in Haiti. The call pursues to receive donations of colorful picture books for babies, either by presenting resources at the Conference, sending them to the Executive Secretariat of ACURIL, or by giving monetary contributions. As Mme. Marie-Françoise Bernabe, past Director of Le Service Commun de la Documentation of the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, has expressed :  “…since these books are full of pictures and colors, language is not a problem”.
  • Purchase of Library Materials. This action line is waiting for Mme. Françoise Thybulle to identify the materials and amount of resources needed.  Contact with different suppliers is being made to have them join our Drive and give a special discount to those colleagues and friends that purchase materials to be sent to Haiti.  From another standpoint, we will be acquiring materials to be sent to Haiti. Resources can also be presented at the Conference.
  • Internship of library personnel in Caribbean Libraries. ACURIL’s President, Carmen Margarita Santos-Corrada, and colleague Francisca Corrada del Rio, of the University of Puerto Rico, Conrado Asenjo Medical Sciences Library, and Luisa Vigo-Cepeda, ACURIL’s Executive Secretary and Acting Director of the Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technologies of the University of Puerto Rico, will coordinate this action item in order to see how ACURIL can ensure collaboration of different libraries in the region. Sponsorship from organizations and the information industry is being sought to help support the costs of internships.  The internship experience in libraries can be from 3 to 6 months.
  • Caribbean Libraries Twinning Project with Libraries in Haiti. For this key item, Mme. Françoise Thybulle will identify the libraries and archives in Haiti that can get into this project, as well as the person in charge, address, telephones, e-mails and ID in Skype, so that the project can be carried out.  At a special meeting to be held by mid-April 2010 in Puerto Rico, Bea Bazile and Luisa Vigo-Cepeda  will discuss the project in order to make approaches, explore possibilities, confirm commitments, and plan effectively.
  • ACURIL’s Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti Roundtable. This activity, to be led by Marie-Françoise Bernabe, Françoise Thybulle, Bea Bazile and Luisa Vigo-Cepeda will bring Haitian colleagues together at two special meetings at ACURIL XL Conference, Sunday, June 6, and Thursday, June 10, 2010.  The matter to be discussed is:  The needs of libraries and archives in Haiti and ACURIL’s Solidary Action, in order to respond proactively and be able to plan with a vision to the present and the future.
  • ACURIL’s Solidarity dresses with T-shirts.  T-shirts sale at ACURIL XL Dominican Republic and ACURIL’S Day of Solidarity with Haiti. This refreshing idea, brought by Mme. Françoise Thybulle, to provide T-shirts for sale at the Conference will be a Plus to ACURIL’s campaign.  As suggested by Prof. Ileana Rosa-Sotomayor, ACURIL will declare Thursday, June 10, as ACURIL’s Day of Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti, and on that Solidarity Day all of us will wear the T-shirts.  The T-shirts ($20.00US) and other items will be available for sale  at the ACURIL’s Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti Table. Other items will also be added to this fund-raising drive.
  • ACURIL Fundraising Drive for Libraries and Archives in Haiti. This action includes our creating a special account from 2010-2011 just for the ACURIL Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti Campaign. Initiating the Drive in April 2010 will give us a precious time to collect some funds in order to present them, as an initial collaboration, to Mme. Françoise Thybulle, at the ACURIL XL Conference. This action will be continued until 2011.  Information about this item will be given shortly.
  • Other ideas will come and will be welcomed, but we need to start preparing ourselves to contribute immediately and effectively.

The ACURILEAN Community is in solidarity with the Libraries and Archives in Haiti.  Join us in this collaborative effort as soon as you can.  Join our cause, the ACURIL in Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti Campaign. Join us in ACURIL XL Dominican Republic, June 6-12, 2010, and from thereon we will continue in a much more Collaborative Action.

With kindest regards and a warm acurilean embrace for all,
